Presenting at ETEC 4

Posted by David Mon, 04 Feb 2008 15:47:12 GMT

I’m going to be presenting at ETEC on RSpec’s Story Runner. This will be more or less the same talk I’m presenting at RailsConf in May, except that it’s in March and on the other coast.

See you in Philly!

Presenting at RailsConf 2008 4

Posted by David Sat, 26 Jan 2008 17:15:59 GMT

I’m going to be presenting at RailsConf 2008 on RSpec’s Story Runner. I’ll be talking about how I approach writing for the Story Runner and address several related issues including:

  • plain text stories vs pure Ruby (when is which appropriate?)
  • extending the RailsStory with custom helpers
  • testing forms using webrat within the Story Runner
  • finding a balance of domain and UI scenarios
  • duplication between stories/scenarios and model/view/controller/helper examples

That’s probably already more than I can cover fairly in a 45 minute presentation, but feel free to make other suggestions if you have them.

See you in Portland!

Presenting at QCon London

Posted by David Wed, 09 Jan 2008 23:29:30 GMT

I’m pleased to report that I’m going to be presenting at QCon London in March. Aslak Hellesøy, Dr. Nic Williams, Kevin Clark and I have been invited to present about various aspects of The Rise of Ruby.

We’ll also be running tutorials on Monday. Aslak and I will present Ruby for Java and C# Programmers and Dr. Nic will present on Rails.

RubyConf 2007 Talk 2

Posted by David Fri, 07 Dec 2007 23:23:00 GMT

The RSpec/BDD talk that Dave Astels and I presented at RubyConf 2007 has been posted for your viewing pleasure.

There are also a bunch of other RubyConf talks posted on the same site.

One correction: In our talk, I said that the role/feature/reason story format came from Mike Cohn’s book User Stories Applied. The real source was a project team at Connextra that Tim MacKinnon was a part of. Tim later joined Thoughtworks, where Dan North learned about it from Tim.

I did, in fact, learn about it from Mike Cohn, but it was at a talk he did at an Agile Conference a couple of summers back. I had also read his book, and somewhere in my head merged the talk and the book.

Speaking at The Rails Edge 3

Posted by David Wed, 06 Jun 2007 18:03:00 GMT

Mike Mangino of Elevated Rails and I are joining forces to do a talk at The Rails Edge in Chicago in August. We’ll be talking about how to use RSpec and Selenium together to drive the development of Rails applications.

Hope to see you there!
